Long Tân is a village in Bà Rịa – Vũng Tàu Province, Việt Nam, at latitude 10°31′ N, and longitude 107°16′ E. When it was part of a separate South Việt Nam, it was in Phước Tuy province. It is renowned for its rubber plantations and hosts a very small population of roughly 1,200 people. This itinerary is designed for Australian and New Zealand veterans and their relatives and friends, and for visitors interested in the battle sites where those countries’ soldiers fought and died. The focus will be on the sights – and wherever possible, we bring past combatants together in a spirit of reconciliation.
Your guide and driver will pick you up at your hotel and drive about 2 hours to Long Tân Cross, a memorial raised by the Australians in August 1969 in memory of the great battle of Long Tân, fought by the Australians and the Việt Cộng in 1966. Driving onwards to the Horseshoe Base, you get a magnificent up-close feel of the chaotic times during the war and the effect it had on the surroundings.
Afterwards we will take you to the Long Phước Tunnels, where you will get a glimpse into the primitive looking, yet highly developed guerilla tactics, used by the Việt Cộng to fight off their enemies. After enjoying lunch, which is included on this trip, we will visit the Nui Dat, SAS Hill, another Australian base before heading to Vũng Tàu. Lunch will be served at a local restaurant, followed by the chance to enjoy your free time on the beach. Overnight in Vũng Tàu.
Breakfast is served at the hotel and free time until we check-out. We will have a few visits before driving back.
● Thích Ca Phật Đài Pagoda: this is a hillside park of monumental Buddhist statuary built in the early 1960s. It is a must-see site for domestic tourists.
● Lighthouse: The 360 degree view of the entire hammer-head-shape peninsula from the lighthouse is truly spectacular, especially at sunset
● Giant Jesus: This 32m-high giant Jesus statue was constructed in 1974. The statue can be reached on foot by a path that heads up the hill.
● White Villa: The Villa Blanche is a former royal residence set on a lushly forested hillside overlooking the sea. It was built in 1909 as a retreat for French governor Paul Doumer. It later became a summer palace for Vietnamese royalty: King Thành Thái, the reigning monarch of the Nguyễn Dynasty at the time. From the late 1960s to the early 1970s, the building was a part-time playground for South Việt Nam President Thiệu.
Drive back to Hồ Chí Minh City and complete your beautiful tour by taking you back to pickup point. End of services.
